Lake Erie College Partners with The Nature Conservancy

You know, in order to understand environmental
science you have to be out in the environment. This partnership really provides an opportunity
that students really need and I- I would suggest often don’t get of you know, really hands-on
learning opportunities and really high quality sites. This is definitely more hands-on. It’s one thing to sit in a classroom and have
a professor talk to you about what’s going on out there, but it’s a whole different animal
if you get out there and actually experience it and kind of get your hands dirty. The Nature Conservancy, we’re a nonprofit
organization, we are a global organization, and our mission is to conserve the lands and
waters on which all life depends. It puts the students in a more authentic environment
where whatever it is that they might be doing is going to have a, a pretty meaningful impact
on maybe the people in that area. It’s a, kind of a win-win. Nature wins because it’s being managed better. People win because they have a much more sustained
resource. Educational opportunities are great not only
to promote the next generation of conservationists hopefully. Also because, like with our partnership here with
Lake Erie College, it’s an opportunity for us to get more data about our preserves. I mean, there’s no end to the research opportunities
at Morgan Swamp, and that’s just one of our preserves! In this partnership we have five others. Again just a lot of opportunities for students
and one of the things we want to do at Lake Erie College with this partnership is we really
want to start focusing more on those research opportunities for undergraduate students. This really opens up a door that most colleges
are not going to have.
