Grower and Elders agronomist use Decipher to conduct VRT

I’m Ryan Watson, after spending nine years
as electrician I ended up coming back to the family farm and it’s probably the
best job I’ve ever had. Brett Atkin, based out of Elders Swan Hill, I service the Wimmera Mallee. I’ve been servicing Ryan now for seven years since 2012, an
average day for me based in- season picking out fertilizers from port,
delivering grain, setting yourself up for the first break. Sowing usually takes up April/
May followed by top dressing and post N sprays. So in the past I’ve had a
play with quite a handful of precision AG tools I’ve found them very
clunky and hard to use programs. Using Decipher for our soil testing for a
couple years now very comfortable had confidence in moving forward with
Decipher for creating prescription maps. One of the biggest challenges we face would be
picking what kind of year it’s gonna be. Ryan came to me and asked what was out
there in regards precision agriculture variable rating. So yeah working with Decipher from soil testing ground-truthing by driving over them and also by the soil tests, and then creating the prescription files that Ryan can use with his GPS
controller. This is the first year we’ve applied precision AG to our farm. We were stuck with either myself or my old man driving the seeder to make sure it was in the right spot there’s a high fatigue system because you had to be on the ball all
the time my old man he drives the seeder occasionally and this was something he
didn’t wanna adopt – he likes his old ways and we’ve always stuck to his old
ways that when the new box come along with a bit more technology he had a
drive and he hated it the first day because he wasn’t in control but he said that he
couldn’t have possibly got it this close. In the 40 years he’s been farming
this land he couldn’t get it this accurate with the manual system that
he’s used in past. The maps were so close that he found parts of the paddock
that he wasn’t aware of over the 40 years of farming it. If you’re not good on computer it’s something that you’ll pick up pretty quick and you can
change it on the go and I’ll continue to use it.
