Ella & Ollie Popcorn — Going Out On the Farm

Ella & Ollie Popcorn — Going Out On the Farm

so we’re going across the Poplar Street
Bridge here to Ella and Ollie farm sixteen miles to the arch There was one night this summer when I came over here to take come pictures it was so beautiful with the sunset &Iwas in the middle of a cornfield And was just listening to the rustling hey everybody I’m not sure how well you
can hear me because wow it’s kind of windy but we’re out here today and we’re
talking about popcorn with my friend Matt Helms that’s Matt over there he and his family recently started a popcornbusiness — Ella and Ollie. these (storage units) have little tubes, probably this big around, perforated and they spike up through the corn, not all the way to the top If you want, I can take that up there if
you want me to like zoom in from the top the lids are open I’ll probably run up
there and get a sample if you’re going to go up there you can take this with you
but I’m not going. okay I’ll probably run over to my moisture shed and grab a couple of little buckets that I can scoop some samples with two or three little
buckets and then we can do is we can open these gates and get some samples
here at the bottom yeah and I want to sample at the bottom
at the top this is the heirloom, this is my movie theater Ready? got a couple little stragglers that
snuck in there on me after my clean-out job so not too many but there are some to clean out, that’s that okay want me to carry that up there? sure. Its on right now Here we go This is the mushroom so the kernels are bigger, this is what makes the ball you can see the size of the kernel Can you turn into the light so I see better? So this is the heirloom and this is the mushroom now actually this one here is going to
be the ball shaped for the gourmet customers after Matt and I pulled samples from the various storage bins we headed over to
test for moisture and I’m gonna speed this up because quite frankly it is a
long time testing but Matt wants to do is make sure he tests multiple samples
from the bottom of each bin and from the top of each bin because that moisture
rating is so important to the quality of popcorn
we got great numbers so now he was gonna send it off to be cleaned make sure that
there’s nothing extra remaining in that popcorn occasionally you may have seen
us pull out one kernel of regular grain corn the machines will take care of all
of that and he’ll be able to go ahead and get it packaged and on the shelves
or available online for customers like you I really appreciate Matt taking me
through the process last year I actually bought some of this popcorn for a number
of friends and family for the holidays and so I know the quality is there in my
home but it’s kind of cool to see how that comes together and how farmers
focus in on that if you’re new to grounded by the farm this is a podcast
website and video series so please check us out on the other channels and you can
always check us out online
