Beekeeping books Giveaway – Storey’s guide to keeping bees – Dr Malcolm Sanford

Beekeeping books Giveaway – Storey’s guide to keeping bees – Dr Malcolm Sanford

if you’re new to the channel welcome my
name is Humberto Boncristiani and this is inside the hive TV the show that
takes you into the world of bees and we like to talk about bees and all bees
related subjects here so if you like bees and want to know more about them
please consider to subscribe and also hit the bell button so we don’t miss a
single thing. In today’s video I’m gonna talk about a good friend of mine dr.
Malcolm Sanford a legend in beekeeping he taught beekeeping at University of
Florida for so many years, worked with beekeeper for so many years, he’s a
writer, he’s an actor he had done all kinds of things that you can possibly
think. A very fantastic person and a good friend of mine that I believe everybody
should know and learn from him. Because he’s doing for so long about beekeeping
he has so much he contributes so much for to the field that it’s
gonna be hard to me to to keep in one single video, so what I decided to do three different videos about his career. I want to talk first in this
video about his book which is something interesting because he was generous
enough to give me five copies signed copies so we’re gonna have a giveaway more
information in the end of this video first video gonna talk about his book to
all different new features it is the second edition beautiful book I recommend it’s
not a sponsorship I’m doing that because I believe the book is good and the
second the second part , the second video is gonna be about his website that
he keeps for so many years he writes a lot of different articles in his website
everything is for free which really fits what my channel is about. About free
science oriented content about bees and beekeeping
so I really enjoy that kind of attitude when people have this feeling this
desire to provide free content to people so I decide this is gonna be a good
content for us too. So the third video is going to be dr. Sanford and I discussing
the future of beekeeping I wanna pick his brain about some difficult subjects
that we face in today’s world about bees and I want to know his opinion, things
about where we going with bees what’s the problem that we’re facing today
there is anything that we can do better this kind of subjects we’re going to be
discussing the third video so without further do let’s jump into the first
video. The idea here today is to to introduce a good friend of mine a legend
and beekeeping and somebody that I’m sure everybody at home can learn a
lot from. How many years in beekeeping professor? well I started in beekeeping
and about 1977 a long time back and my I started beekeeping as a
geographer first off and later as an entomologist and so beekeeping has both
of those parts to it as a geographical aspect to it because it’s something
people often don’t understand is the situation with reference to specific
geography and bees behavior in certain geographic settings
some people think bees are all the same they operate the same no matter where
you are in the world that’s not the case so I started with my first beekeeping
experience really was in Georgia the University of Georgia where I was a
lab technician with dr. Al Dietz up there and then my next situation was
going to doing a geographic thesis of the beekeeping in the Yucatan Peninsula
in Mexico Wow that’s that’s nice long time ago a
long time ago I feel that I need to stop a little and just to organize the house
here it’s gonna be hard in just a couple of videos to tell everything I would
like to talk about this guy so the way I’m organized 76 years old so
I mean hey you know that’s part of the issue right talk about maybe too much
but I want to talk as much as I can right so the way I’m trying to do that I
don’t want to explain to people at home is first this first video we got is a
short introduction about doctor Stanford and we’re gonna talk more about his book
write stories’ guide to keeping honeybees here we go the reason the motivation for
for me to do that because the first edition of this book was one of the
books that I learned beekeeping myself when the first one first one came out in
2002 toe okay that makes sense yeah I I used this book I was very happy with the
book but when I got here and gainesville, in Florida and I saw the second edition
I got excited I got excited because the the way they organized the book really
fits what I believe it’s necessary for a book to pass a message in beekeeping is
more one of the things I read probably I probably read all the beekeeping books
out there and one thing that I can tell about this one that I like a lot is when
you’re studying beekeeping your mind goes away when you be scanned a pathogen
and the plants and your mind and start to fly away
in the panels and organizations that you guys put in I think that was very
special I had good editors I had good energy very good very good because
you’re learning something and you start to ask yourself oh how about that and
then the panel is there and then oh how about how about that there’s something
right there close by that you can’t connect the whole story much easier in
my opinion and I enjoyed that so one of one of my motivations because you guys
at home complaining that I do not bring good stuff to the channel about diseases
and bee dying as a disaster things cause are good things so in this video series we’re gonna talk
about good stuff you’re gonna how we can get free science
oriented information from dr. Sanford from his book his website which is free
free website, a lot of information there for free and I and and then we’re gonna also
talk about bee problems today and I want his opinion about a lot of different
aspect of me keeping today so that’s some what’s the video series is about so
professor what tell me about your book well it’s as I say it’s this in the
second edition yes it’s pretty it’s been around now a while people have been
involved in the looking at it and coming to grips with it so the second edition
came out with some a little bit of tweaks about how it could be done better
and again as I said I had very good editors at stories guide story as a
large publishing house that publishes all kinds of animal husbandry
so there’s stories guide to raising ducks there’s guys they’re raising
chickens and this is the bee part of that stories guide to keeping honey bees
originally the focus of this book really was two books written by Richard Bonney
and he was a Maryland beekeeper and it was also involved in regulation and so
on and he wrote a couple of books this Storey published and those then became
the focus and the sort of the basis for this book. He died. so Richard
unfortunately Dix no longer with us so I picked up that challenge to try to take
these two books that he developed a little bit and stuff that I have and put
it together into one a part of the Stories because soar didn’t have a
beekeeping book this is their bee keeping book so I’m really happy about
that that that that concept came out that way so that’s the that’s where it
all began and as I say the first edition has been sell pretty well and what’s
unique about this book are several areas one is stories of beekeepers real life
stories of beekeepers who wrote in I’ve written a newsletter for many many years
and I ask people during the writing of this book would you send me something a
story about how you got into beekeeping what was what what were your challenges
what are you doing what was your history whatever and we
took those stories and put them together and edit to them and put them in the
book as part of the part of the uniqueness of this book so it’s got
these stories that are interspersed throughout the text about there is
people they have a bee inspector mm-hm we have several people that are involved
in bees with women beekeepers men beekeepers that kind of thing so that’s
part of the uniqueness of this book the other is the panel’s you’re talking
about I love these are text boxes basically and the boxes there’s a whole
list basically of those that are involved ones that might might be
interested it would be like there’s one about the observation hive there’s one
about what I call a matter of physics which has to do with the idea of the
winter cluster and basically and how the winter cluster survives winter or
doesn’t it’s all a matter of physics basically the Tao of smoking bees it’s
one of my favorites we know all about the know the Tao the
idea of the Tao philosophy more is less is good more the kind of idea like that
and so in the Tao of smoking bees I discussed a little bit about how you can
actually use less smoke most beekeepers use too much smoke and so it becomes
kind of a judgement call and then the Tao be smoked talks about
losing it’s less smoke and what that means that’s the next thing that people
talked about with this book and the first edition was line drawings not been
that many photographs there was one or two photographs on the cover and so on
but story decided to go ahead and upgrade this second edition and it’s
just chock-full of chock-full of color photographs people like that yeah and
then we got some pretty good response from that so that’s another a little bit
different than other books it might that you might see and and store it in this
guide of course was upgraded because of that so we have the text boxes we have
the stories we have the color photographs and then we have the actual
layout and so on of the book and I added a couple things about “Apiscentric”
beekeeping APIs centric meaning we’re not talking so much about beekeepers
but about bees and the new there’s a new concept of they’re called honeybee
health mmm-hmm that’s the new kind of mantra yes yeah so how do you be health
as an important this year no question about that people never thought about
that for many years when I started beekeeping nobody ever said what about
honeybee health it was that wasn’t an issue as well right
and that’s another thing that beekeeping is shifted to now we know it’s not much
in the books a little bit about pollination but when I started
beekeeping it was all about honey yep as I say when I went to Mexico is all about
exporting honey to our be wilson company York and then just the last in a really
less decade or so it’s now become pollination is the driving force whose
where the more and that’s where the money is and that’s where people are
keeping bees are and they’re not so much in another production anymore so that
has shifted quite a bit I don’t talk about that much in this book but I talk
a little bit about pollination what’s involved and how how people beekeepers
might be able to start that as an enterprise that’s the other thing that
beekeeping is interesting in terms of the enterprises you can you can produce
products you can produce services everything around the honeybee and that
makes it a very competitive sort of situation to be in where you can choose
pick and choose what kind of thing is more economically advantaged
advantageous to you if you’re gonna be keeping bees reading the book I I’m
trying to ask myself who who were you thinking yeah it’s a good question
because I can see not only basic things but some more advanced combined so who
is the target well you know that’s a good question
there’s no real there’s no real right answer to that hey you know I’m not the
first person to write a bee book I think you mentioned a few people like Lang
stirreth and back in the 1850s and all that there’s been a few more be books
written since then and this this is sort of the last of the whatever but anyways
so so as a consequence secuence in my vision and and talking with story we
need something that’s got a you know will sell more books I mean it’s one of
the concepts you can’t you don’t have any do not have no information people
want they’re not gonna buy your book so this thing is basically oriented to the
beginner yeah it really is a beginning beekeeping is a beginning but I I can’t
see there is more right there is more in there that’s that’s part of you know
over time the the writer myself getting more
information to be able to put it involved in the book but the actual
audience is the beginning beekeeper and that’s what we’re really marketing to
the beginner and we hope then that people will come and look at the stories
and other kinds of areas and maybe get a little broader review independent where
they’re coming from but it is the it is a beginning beekeeping book it’s not the
only one out there right well you’re a good competitor I can’t that’s a good
book well yeah thank you thank you very much anyway I appreciate you inviting me
to come to your channel and talk to people and see what’s going on and thank
you for yeah yeah I think people will beneficiate a lot from your experience
well so we’re gonna give this book away right yeah thinking about that’s
important yeah it’s important to giving this thing away yeah yeah generous man
to giveaway five Books yeah way to do that and I need to do some homework but
um I’m glad to do that so I gonna put the you can like a raffle
how does that operate okay I’m gonna need to put the rules so have a rule the
rules are down here you can find in the destination along gonna leave it up
myself because I don’t have any idea a link to my website and the rules gonna
be there so you can see what you need to do to enter in this competition there’s
gonna be five books and the rules are gonna be very well explained it there
I’m not gonna spend time here to cover those rules because I probably don’t
know them yet we need to figure out a way it’s like everything else the world
is kind of little complex right little more complex than you might yeah but
probably something that for sure is going to be in the rules is one you
need you like this video and comment in this video and share with friends and
family that that helps a lot your chance is to get because I think the raffle is
gonna come from those comments or or people that liked this video and
interact with this video and I think we’re gonna get that who the winners
from from those interactions but the full rule is gonna be there in the
description below right here just click more and you can find a link that goes
to my website and the rules are there and you know what to do to get one of
these copies stories guide to keeping honey bees that’s right
thank you sir and I’d be glad to come the next time we talk about my website
I’m really excited about that there’s a stateless information Resource Center
it’ll be next number to his website where everybody can learn a lot about
bees free of charge see you guys next week bye bye bye

  4. Thank you for interviewing Dr. Sanford and his great knowledge. Looking forward to hearing further video's from you both…

  5. I truly enjoy beekeeping. Been keeping bees for 4 years in a very rural community. Have learned so much. They are fascinating creatures. Being in a rural community I get very little true "Science of bees". Just a lot of practical and very little science based info. I'm very interested in what makes them tick and not this is how it is. I would really enjoy reading your book and adding it to my collection. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully, Rick.

  6. This channel is pure gold for beekeepers all around the world. Keep them coming Dr. Humberto Boncristiani. Greetings from Poland.

  7. Great videos. Look forward to more! Shame I don't use social media so I guess no book chance. Been been keeping for 10 years and am always looking for additional resources. Maybe local library has a copy.

  8. Will be joining and would love a copy to add to my library to increase my beekeeping knowledge. As a Florida beekeeper and having gone to Florida bee college hope the Chanel will help me learn my local bees better.0

  10. Great information and good quality video. I definitely want to read Dr. Sanford's book. I started backyard beekeeping only 3 years ago, and I still have a lot to learn.

  11. Dr Stanford, you are but a newbie. I am also 76, but started in 1952, stopped when you started in 1977, and began again only 2 years ago. So much new info since my early days I am trying to catch up. Varroa is new, and such a major threat. I also run a mentor program for other newbies, and trying to be sure I am as up to date as possible.

  12. great video, looking forward to more, i just cant seem to get enough education on the bees I would love to have and read the book to enhance my knowledge of all things bee related -fascinating

  15. I am new to beekeeping, am waiting to receive my first bees later this month. Not a lot of support in my area and the nearest beekeeping club is about 3 hours away, so I am doing everything I can from multiple sources to learn. I am looking forward to reading this book.

  16. I love the wonderful concept and direction of the video collection. I have been receiving Dr. Sanford's emails for years and always find a special nugget in each one. Having a new and revised book for today's beginning beekeeper is very important for our times. Bee health is important.

  17. I've had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sanford, and I've enjoyed reading his emails and articles for many years. I've also recently started watching Dr. Boncristiani's channel and find it refreshing, entertaining, and educational — a magical combination! Keep up the good work, gentlemen!

  18. My husband and I have been hobby beekeepers for well over 10 years. We love helping new people get started. We always joke about "ask 10 beekeepers a question, get 10 different answers!" It would be nice to have a concise book to refer to. It will also be great to have a web site that we feel good recommending. Thanks for all your good work!

  19. I tried to raise bees in 2009, but things did not work out, with getting these videos, have made me want to try again, already have the 2 hive boxes, and live on 6 acres, and retired now, which I have more time. Thank you for the great video's

  20. This is a wonderful service, helping to teach people about beekeeping. I am a past president of my bee club and would love to have the book to share with them.
